Hello – I was recently invited to two faculty recitals that sound too good to miss!!

Our new voice, youth chorus, and theory teacher Jeanai La Vita will be performing in Scarsdale on Sunday May 20 and piano faculty Svetlana Gorokhovich will be performing on Friday May 18 in NYC. See below for details.

Music Conservatory of Westchester’s honor students, pianists Melody Hsu (second from left) of Rye, N.Y. and Derek Cheung of Eastchester, N.Y. received 1^st and 2^nd place, respectively, at the prestigious American Fine Arts Festival Piano Strings, Winds & Voice International Concerto Competition.  Melody performed a rousing rendition of “Chopin Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, mvt.” which secured her an opportunity to play in the Winners’ Recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall this fall.  Melody and Derek are pictured with their renowned Music Conservatory of Westchester instructors, Svetlana Gorokhovich of White Plains, N.Y. (far left) and Irena Portenko of Ardsley, N.Y.
Melody and four other winners will be performing with the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra on May 19th at 7:30 pm at Saunders Technical High School. The address is 183 Palmer Rd, Yonkers, NY. You can learn more by following this Link: http://yonkersphilharmonic.org/ This is a free concert.

Tyler Bogen is a senior at Byram Hills High School.

Hi! I’ll be updating you on my experience as an intern over the next few weeks. Hope you enjoy!

I’m spending the last six weeks of my high school year as an intern here at the Music Conservatory of Westchester. I chose to work here as part of my internship program at my school. I myself am a musician and study voice and take outside voice lessons regularly. I’m a bass part of my school’s concert and jazz choirs, Tri-M Music Honor Society and have competed in NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) in the past two years. I had the honor of being selected and participated in Area Allstate 2011. So, as you can see, music and singing for me are two key components of my huge passion for the performing arts. Interning at a place like MCW allows me to help foster the creativity and education of music for people of all ages.

This week, I had an excellent opportunity of sitting in and observing a cello lesson for a five-year-old boy taught by Adriana Maria Pera. In that half-hour lesson I got to see what this place is all about. The student was extremely excited throughout the lesson, and enthusiastic about learning to play an instrument. I also strongly believe learning music at a young age  – just like this student – is the best time in a kid’s life to learn and become successful playing music. He has mastered the C and D scale and is learning the F scale and the proper arm form when holding the cello. He is learning so much at a young age with a very supporting mother, who watched the lesson, and faculty member. These are the building blocks for success for this young student.

Along with viewing lessons, I have helped around the office for any small yet important tasks to be completed. Whether it is helping with invitations, organizing recital programs or helping to spread the word on social media, I’m immersed in all things MCW. Currently I am working on a computer project by finding articles and pictures of the Conservatory over the last four years from various archives and organizing them in folders where they will be printed and placed on display in our lobby.

So far, so great!

About Richard Cross
voice
Lecturer in Voice. Bass Richard Cross made both his European and his New York debuts in 1958. He has appeared with numerous opera companies, including those of San Francisco, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Madrid, Cologne, Hamburg, Budapest, and Washington, as well as with the New York City Opera.
Mr. Cross has appeared at the Glynebourne Festival, the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, and the Schwetzingen Festival. He has sung with many of the major symphony orchestras, including those of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Pittsburgh.
Mr. Cross has recorded for London Records, RCA, and Columbia. He is currently on the faculties of the Juilliard School and State University of New York at Stony Brook. He joined the Yale faculty in 1997.

Dear MCW Parents and Students,

As the end of the year approaches, I’d like to take this time to thank all of you for your hard work, participation in classes, lessons and ensembles as well as your wonderful performances throughout the year. I am so looking forward to our final Ensembles Concerts on May 12, Composers and Suzuki Recitals on May 19, Adult Student and Student Recitals on June 2, 6, 8 and 9. We have had more concerts than ever before. I have been delighted to see so many students participating and such great work being done!

In addition to the above concerts, we have a vocal recital featuring German music sung by our voice faculty and select students this Saturday (April 21) at the New Rochelle Public Library at 2 p.m. In addition, we have a master class with distinguished voice professor Richard Cross of Juilliard and Yale here at MCW at 4:30 p.m. on May 5. These performances are part of a special project: Romanticism and the German Lied, funded by a grant from the Rudyard and Emanuella Reimss Fund and the Westchester Community Foundation General Fund.
