The MCW Kids! Series (formerly Kids on Central) kicks off this Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m., at White Plains Public Library. MCW faculty member Jim Ranti will lead a discussion and a performance by his students. The audience is encouraged to ask the performers questions, and to see (and touch) instruments up close. The next MCW Kids! event will be concert will take place Sunday, Feb. 12 also at White Plains Library. All Kids! events are free and open to the public.

Enthusiastic children learn about musical instruments at the Music Conservatory of Westchester’s Kids on Central “The String Family” event held at the White Plains Public Library. Children had the opportunity to see, touch, and try the different instruments. Upcoming events include an informal concert by the Conservatory’s jazz and rock ensembles held on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Via Vante in Mount Kisco. The Kids on Central series continued yesterday, Jan. 30, at White Plains Public Library. MCW faculty member Jim Ranti led a discussion and a performance by his students. The audience was encouraged to ask the performers questions, and to see (and touch) their instruments up close. The Jan. 7 scheduled concert featuring world renowned opera singer (and former NFL player!) Lawrence Harris (baritone)  and his wife, MCW faculty musician Renee Guerrero (piano), has been postponed to Wednesday, Jan 12 at 7:30pm.  The “Kids on Central” concert scheduled for Jan. 15 has been postponed. On February 27, NY Philharmonic’s Jon Deak will offer a free children’s composition workshop at the Music Conservatory. The workshop, which begins at 12:30PM, is open to the public. Advanced registration is requested.  Later that afternoon, “Kids on Central: Piano, Percussion, and Harp” will teach audience members about what the three instruments have in common through engaging demonstrations and original compositions written and performed by Conservatory students. The unique stories center on a “Magic Ring!”  Children also have the opportunity to see, touch, and try out the different instruments prior to the concert at 2:30PM.

Amanda Ryckman, who moved to Chappaqua from Florida a few months ago, enrolled her daughter in music and voice classes and it is really paying off. “It’s opened a lot of doors,” Ryckman said of her 10-year-old daughter, Victoria. “My daughter, right now, her whole life is music. She’s already doing opera, she’s singing in Italian.” Victoria wasn’t singing in Italian on Saturday, but she did play the role of a rural mouse in “City Mouse-Country Mouse,” produced by the Music Conservatory of Westchester.
