Performances by acclaimed Jazz musicians throughout March, April, and May

The Music Conservatory of Westchester, the county’s premiere school for the arts, will host a series of jazz concerts featuring acclaimed performers Rale Micic, the Neil Alexander Quartet, and Trio Shalva. The series follows two outstanding jazz concerts from this past year, The Nadav Snir-Zelniker Trio and The Pete Malinverni Trio.

The series will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25^th, with a special free performance by Conservatory faculty musician Rale Micic alongside Mimi Jones (bass) and Israel Bannerman (drums). In addition to being a dedicated educator, Micic is a CTA Records recording artist and has performed at prominent jazz clubs and music festivals throughout the United States and Europe. During his jazz series performance, Micic will be filming scenes for the music video for his song ‘Serbology,’ a track off his third album, 3.

Following shortly after Micic’s exciting performance and music video shoot, Conservatory faculty pianist Hiroshi Yamazaki will perform a jazz benefit concert at the Conservatory on Thursday, March 31^st at 7:00 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the relief effort in Japan. The Osaka-born Yamazaki will be joined by fellow artists Bill Crow and Sean Smith (bass), Jan Leder (flute), Takeshi Ogura (guitar), Andrew Beals (alto sax), and Tony Jefferson (drums). The Neil Alexander Quartet is the third group to perform in the jazz series and will take the stage at the Conservatory on Saturday, April 2^nd at 8:00 p.m. A rock-infused jazz band founded by Neil Alexander, a Jazz pianist, synthesizer, and composer, the Neil Alexander Quartet also features renowned musician Nadav Zelniker (drums), Steve Frieder (saxophone), and Jim Cammack (acoustic/electric bass). Next, jazz lovers are invited to join Trio Shalva on Saturday, April 16^th, at 8:00 p.m. for a special performance and the launch of their new album, “Riding Alone.” The record is the culmination of a year-long project by founding members Assaf Gleizner (piano/melodic), Koby Hayon (bass/guitar/oud) and Nadav Snir-Zelniker (drums/percussion). The result is a striking blend of jazz, world music, and Jewish folk music, exuding an aural representation of a Middle Eastern landscape. The culmination of the series will be a Jazz Brunch held at the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye on Sunday, May 15, featuring distinguished Conservatory musicians Harold Jones (flute), Irena Portenko (piano), Alfred Renino (bass), and Nick Mangini (drums). The group will perform Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio. Shenorock Shore Club, 475 Stuyvesant Avenue, Milton Point, Rye, NY. 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tickets start at $75. The Music Conservatory of Westchester, in collaboration with the Mount Kisco Concert Association, welcomes New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Bassist Jon Deak for a special Halloween concert featuring classical music with a twist of humor. Deak will be joined by violinist Joanna Jenner, founding member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and noted piano soloist and chamber musician Zeyda Ruga Suzuki for “Call of the Wild,” on Sunday, October 31 at 2PM.

Also a prominent composer, Jon Deak’s compositions have lead to Pulitzer Prize nominations as well as commissions and premieres by the New York Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, and numerous chamber music groups and festivals. This “Call of the Wild” concert will feature Deak’s work as well as repertory by Mozart, Chopin, and a variety of short salon pieces.

“Jon has gained great success in his unique educational efforts on behalf of young composers,” said Joanna Jenner, violin faculty member at the Conservatory. “Zeyda and I love playing his music as much as audiences of all ages enjoy hearing it!” Deak will also perform a solo of his own, “B. B. Wolf,” that engages the audience through music, speech, and even a little acting.

Jenner continued, “The final piece on the program, ‘The Wager at the Eldorado Saloon,’ is a work of Jon’s that was commissioned by the people of Homer, Alaska and premiered by us there. He was inspired by Jack London’s Call of the Wild, a novel set in Alaska during the Gold Rush. In his inimitable style using music, words, and sound effects, Jon manages to capture the braggadocio of desperate gold miners, the heroism of a sled dog, and the honky-tonk atmosphere of a saloon.”

In addition to Deak’s compositions, Zeyda Ruga Suzuki and Joanna Jenner will perform works by Mozart, Chopin, three arrangements for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler, as well as an original Kreisler piece. Cuban pianist Zeyda Ruga Suzuki will also be featured in two piano solos including “The Danza Cubano” by Raphael Vega Caso.

“The Danza is a typical example of the Cuban dance genre begun by Manuel Cervantes,” explained Zeyda Ruga Suzuki. “Rafael Vega Caso, a Cuban operatic composer who studied both on the island and at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, dedicated the piece to me — but never wrote it. He made me write it as he played it for me and my family. I was only around 9-10 years old at the time.”

The performance will be held in the Conservatory’s Helen Demetrios and Michael Stadther Recital Hall. Tickets for “Call of the Wild” are $25; free for Conservatory students when accompanied by an adult. The following week, the Conservatory will explore the art of collaboration between voice and piano with a faculty performance on Friday, November 5 at 7PM. “The Marriage of Voice and Piano” features two married couples of faculty artists including Jessica Medoff, soprano with Michael Bunchman, piano, and Nils Neubert, tenor, with Yuri Kim, piano. On March 19, 2010, join piano duo Svetlana Gorokhovich and Irena Portenko for our next “Live on Central” concert at 7 p.m.  Symphonic and operatic repertoire that has been arranged for four-hand or piano duo setting. Attempts to minimize the number of players, but retain broad variety of timbres and dynamics as well as to mirror the range of voices and orchestral instruments.

White Plains, NY – The Music Conservatory of Westchester welcomes New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Bassist Jon Deak for a February concert lineup that celebrates world renowned musicians and budding young artists alike.  Joined by violinist Joanna Jenner, founding member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and noted piano soloist and chamber musician Zeyda Ruga Suzuki, the trio presents “Serious But Not Stuffy,” classical music with a twist of humor, on Friday, February 26 at 7PM. The following day, February 27 at 3PM, “Piano, Percussion, and Harp” will offer children a fun, informative, and hands-on introduction to the instruments with music written and performed by Conservatory composition students.

“It’s really exciting – and valuable – for students to learn about how music is created as well as performed,” said Jean Newton, the Conservatory’s Dean of Students and Faculty. “We’re thrilled to have faculty like Joanna Jenner, who perform at the highest level and also really enjoy teaching kids. We’re also thrilled that Mr. Deak will be coming to work with our students as well as perform with Ms. Jenner.”

On February 27, Deak will offer a free children’s composition workshop at the Conservatory. The workshop, which begins at 12:30PM, is open to the public. Advanced registration is requested.

Later that afternoon, “Piano, Percussion, and Harp” will teach audience members about what the three instruments have in common through engaging demonstrations and original compositions written and performed by Conservatory students. Children also have the opportunity to see, touch, and try out the different instruments prior to the concert at 2:30PM.

Performances are held in the Conservatory’s Helen Demetrios and Michael Stadther Recital Hall. Tickets for “Serious But Not Stuffy” and “Piano, Percussion, and Harp” are $15; $10 for students and senior citizens; and free for Conservatory students and faculty. Concerts are free, open to the public, and held at Grace Church, 33 Church Street in White Plains, NY at 12:10 p.m. On February 24, Conservatory faculty guitarist Thomas Flippin performs works by living composers in “The Modern Guitar” as part of the series.
